Treating Skin with Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a unique skin rejuvenation method designed to improve the quality and appearance of your skin. But while they’re often compared to facials, chemical peels are much less of a spa treatment than most would think. In fact, not only can chemical peels enhance the overall appearance of your skin, but certain formulations can treat skin conditions such as acne, wrinkles and sun damage!

Interested in improving the quality of your skin with clinical-grade chemical peels? Palo Alto Laser & Skin Care has a wide range of options, each customized to your specific skin type.

SkinMedica Illuminize Peel®

Illuminize is a peel that works to brighten the overall appearance of the skin for patients with mild skin imperfections. This treatment is perfect for first-time chemical peel patients, as it requires no downtime and typically does not cause peeling of the skin.

You can receive an Illuminize Peel every two weeks until you’re happy with the appearance of your skin. But keep in mind that results are cumulative and your skin improves over time! Optimal results have been seen with three or more peels.

SkinMedica Rejuvenize Peel

Rejuvenize Peels are designed to smooth out lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and roughness for patients with moderate-to-severe skin imperfections. This treatment is ideal for those experiencing unevenness in the skin caused by acne scarring, pigmentation and skin aging. The Rejuvenize Peel can result in mild flaking of the skin, or peeling in sheets, depending on your skin type and condition. But don’t worry—the peel is just doing its job! After damaged layers are eliminated, smooth and healthy skin is revealed.

The number of peels needed will depend on the level of skin damage you’re experiencing, but can vary from three to six sessions. This chemical peel can be repeated every four to six weeks—but be sure to consult with your skin specialist about post-treatment care.

SkinMedica Vitalize Peel®

Vitalize is a peel designed for patients with mild-to-moderate skin imperfections such as aging and sun exposure. It can also address uneven skin texture for those with acne scars or changes in pigmentation. Like the Rejuvenize Peel, it’s completely normal to experience peeling after your treatment. You may also notice redness or a yellow tint on the treated skin, which should only last a few hours.

The typical Vitalize treatment plan is three to six peels with three to four weeks between each session. The exact number of peels needed depends on the condition of your skin and can be addressed by your Palo Alto Laser & Skin Care expert.

Glycolic Acid Peel

If you can’t tell from its name, a glycolic acid peel contains glycolic acid—a component that is popular for treating wrinkles and acne. When applied to the skin as a chemical peel, the solution exfoliates and replenishes all layers of the skin while eliminating the outer dull, dead layers. Additionally, acne scars and pigmentation can be improved, providing your skin with a clear, younger-looking appearance.

While you may notice an immediate enhancement of your skin after one glycolic acid peel, it may take multiple sessions to achieve desired progress of your skin’s condition. Ask your Palo Alto Laser & Skin Care expert for their recommendation on number of treatments and time taken between each session.

Salicylic Acid Peel

Like glycolic acid, salicylic acid is commonly used in several products designed to treat acne and exfoliate the skin. Salicylic acid peels have those benefits and more—also addressing fine lines, wrinkles and blemishes for a smooth and even skin tone. Additionally, since salicylic acid is a gentle product, it treats the skin with little to downtime or side effects. You may notice dramatic results after one salicylic acid peel, but optimal improvements can be seen with more than one treatment.
