Did your mother tell you that there was no fix for cellulite? That might have been true in years past, but now there’s a fast and easy injectable that releases the fibrous bands that cause cellulite—Qwo. Now available at Palo Alto Laser and Skin Care, Qwo is FDA-approved to treat cellulite in the buttocks of women (sorry, no men at this moment). Optimal results are typically achieved with three treatment sessions spaced three weeks apart. A maximum of 12 dimples can be treated in one session.

But what exactly is Qwo and does it really work? It’s the first (and only!) injectable for cellulite approved by the FDA for moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks. Over 90 percent of women have cellulite, often in the buttocks, and a Harris poll found that half of women are bothered either “a lot” or “a great deal” by it. Cellulite is primarily caused by connective tissue (fibrous septae), and it becomes evident as skin thins with age while simultaneously fat cells get bigger and push through to become more visible. This whole combination leads to a dimpling that many people do not want to show off. Although cellulite can become more pronounced with age and in some cases with weight gain, any person of any age can struggle with this harmless but embarrassing condition.

The Magic of Qwo

Qwo injections are made of collagenase, a type of enzyme that targets the structural foundation of cellulite. It helps fibrous bands release while evening out fat cell distribution. As a bonus, it also stimulates collagen production so results can continue to improve in the weeks following your treatment. Earlier in 2021, Phase 3 of the Qwo evaluation was completed with results published in Dermatologic Surgery, the American Society for Dermatological Surgery magazine. This study was conducted in 2018 and showed that Qwo offers a “clinically meaningful improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women compared to a placebo.”

This data was sourced from the largest study on cellulite ever conducted and underscores how effective Qwo can be for women challenged by cellulite in one of the most common areas. Women with all skin types and tones who want to say goodbye to cellulite might be a great match for Qwo, but it’s important to remember that results aren’t permanent. Fibrous bands will push back in coming months or years, recreating the cellulite appearance, but the good news is that women can opt for additional Qwo treatments in the future.

The Qwo Data

All three phases of the Qwo study were designed the same way, and all were double-blinded and randomized. There was a total of 843 women included in the study who were considered as having moderate or severe cellulite. According to researchers, “These studies reaffirm that many study participants and their doctors found that Qwo delivered a clinically relevant improvement in the appearance of cellulite, and we are thrilled to have this data published.”

The researchers also reiterated that bruising is to be expected with these injections, with 84 percent of patients reporting site bruising. However, given the location of the injections (the buttocks), such bruising is easy to hide and the bruises go away on their own in the days following the injection. However, those with bleeding disorders may not be considered good candidates for Qwo. Sharing all medical and medication information with your Qwo injector is critical for safe and effective outcomes.

Is Qwo for You?

We offer complimentary consultations on all treatments and procedures, including Qwo, so you can find out if this is the right treatment for you. It is important to consider that what might appear to be cellulite is actually skin laxity, particularly in the buttocks. In some cases, cellulite might be present in tandem with skin laxity. However, if the issue is laxity rather than cellulite, skin tightening treatments might be the solution for you—and we have treatments available to tighten and tone the skin as well.
