If you think wrinkles are the primary signs of aging, that is only half of the equation. Palo Alto Laser and Skin Care often recommends combining Botox with dermal fillers because lost volume is another key sign of aging. It might not be as obvious as lines and wrinkles at first blush, but we all lose good volume and fat in our face as we get older. Voluminous, plump skin is an inherent sign of youth—which is why those with “baby faces” tend to look younger for much longer.
Botox, and its counterparts such as Dysport, have long been a client favorite because results are fast and dramatic, yet still natural-looking. Botox is a minimally invasive procedure that temporarily “freezes” the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It can also be used as a preventative measure to stop lines and wrinkles from forming. Lines are caused by repetitive muscle movement, which means they can be trained just like you train muscles in the gym. However, with Botox, these muscles are “trained” to be weak so that they cannot create furrows and wrinkles. In fact, many people in their early twenties have started a Botox regimen in order to ward off early signs of aging.
Other Uses for Botox
While Botox was created to treat lines and wrinkles, over the decades it has become a popular tool for other needs, too. One of the most common is to stop excessive sweating. Routine Botox injections can put a stop to excess sweating and can be injected anywhere in the body that produces excess sweat. Botox is also regularly used to prevent and minimize migraines. Most recently, studies have shown that Botox injections can help to reduce disorders such as depression, too.
Botox has recently made headlines for the “lip flip.” This is when tiny amounts of Botox are expertly applied along the upper lip line in order to “flip” it out. This can help to hide a gummy smile and create the appearance of a fuller upper lip—even without fillers. However, since the mouth is highly mobile, Botox injections do not last as long in this area. Three months is the average amount of time Botox lasts for a lip flip, which makes dermal fillers a better option for most.
The Power of Dermal Fillers
Most dermal fillers are made of a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid (HA). This means the results are immediate, though some initial swelling may occur. HA fillers are safe, effective, and there are a wide variety to choose from. Our medical day spa has all of the best, safest dermal fillers for your skin care goals. Each dermal filler is designed for a specific part of the body, such as the lips, temples, cheeks, jawline, and even tops of the hands. Fillers allow you to instantly restore the volume you’ve lost over the years or give you volume where you’ve always wanted it.
Dermal fillers vary in how long they last based on the type, location, and how many syringes are used. On average, dermal fillers last anywhere from 9 – 18 months. There are also options for non-HA fillers, which work more like collagen induction therapy. The results are not as fast, but they do last longer. These fillers are best reserved for those who want the most natural look and a slow and steady revelation of results.
Combining Injectables
Both Botox and dermal fillers are “injectables,” thus fall in the category of minimally invasive procedures that require needles. However, there is virtually no downtime. Some light bruising may occur with both Botox and fillers, though this is usually minor and dissipates within a few days. If you’re thinking of getting injectables for a special event, it’s best to plan your procedure for two weeks prior. This will allow plenty of time for bruising and swelling to subside. Plus, since it takes Botox a few days to “take hold,” you will also see full results at two weeks.
