Eliminate Spider Veins
& Small Varicose Veins

Sclerotherapy is a proven medical procedure to treat bothersome spider veins and small varicose veins. During the procedure, a specially formulated solution (Asclera) is injected into the targeted veins. This solution causes the veins to shrink, collapse, and eventually fade from view. Palo Alto Laser & Skin Care uses Asclera (polidocanol) for sclerotherapy to ensure effective, safe, and satisfying results.

Sclerotherapy Treats:

  • Spider veins less than 1 mm in diameter
  • Reticular veins (small varicose veins) between 1 to 3 mm in diameter

Advantages Of Sclerotherapy:

  • Non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment
  • Minimal discomfort during and after treatment
  • Quick procedure (concludes within 45 minutes)
  • Little to no downtime
  • Effectively removes unwanted spider and reticular veins

Sclerotherapy FAQs

How does sclerotherapy work?

Sclerotherapy introduces a sclerosing agent, such as polidocanol (Asclera), into the targeted veins. This solution irritates the inner lining of the vein, prompting inflammation and causing the vessel to constrict. Over time, the vein transforms into scar tissue, sealing off blood flow. The body absorbs the scar tissue, leading to the fading or disappearance of the treated vein. This ensures successful vein removal and improved circulation.

What makes Asclera unique?

Asclera is an FDA-approved polidocanol medication used for sclerotherapy. Polidocanol is a detergent-based sclerosing agent that disrupts the endothelium, the inner lining of blood vessels. By inducing endothelial damage and inflammation, Asclera causes the veins to collapse. Asclera is an extremely safe, clinically tested medication.

How is sclerotherapy performed?

During sclerotherapy, our professionals will inject the targeted veins with Asclera using ultra-fine needles. The number of injections will depend on the size, number, and locations of your unwanted veins. This process is virtually painless and usually concludes in 15 to 45 minutes.

Is sclerotherapy painful?

You’ll experience minimal discomfort during sclerotherapy. The Asclera injections are generally well-tolerated and cause minimal pain.

What are the side effects?

In some cases, you might notice minor side effects after sclerotherapy, including temporary redness, bruising, small skin sores, or slight swelling at the injection sites. These effects usually fade within a few days or weeks.

Is there any downtime?

Following sclerotherapy, you can usually resume your daily activities without significant interruption. However, you should avoid heavy lifting, strenuous workouts, direct sunlight, hot baths, hot tubs, and saunas for a few days.

How long do I have to wear compression stockings?

You must wear compression stockings for 2-3 days after treating spider veins or 5-7 days after treating reticular veins. Our cosmetic providers will inform you about compression hose use after the procedure.

When will the sclerotherapy results appear?

After sclerotherapy, you can expect the gradual disappearance of treated veins over a few weeks to a few months, revealing clearer, rejuvenated skin.

How many sclerotherapy sessions will I need for optimal results?

The number of sclerotherapy sessions you’ll need depends on the extent of your vein concerns. Our providers will determine the ideal frequency and timing of treatments after an evaluation.

How long do the sclerotherapy results last?

Sclerotherapy provides permanent results — once the treated veins fade, they do not reappear. However, you can still develop new spider veins, for which you’ll need additional treatments.
