Morepheus8 is the next generation of microneedling, combining the collagen induction therapy of traditional microneedling with the power of radiofrequency (RF) energy. Now available at Palo Alto Laser and Skin Care, for those who are committed to anti-aging naturally and healing from the inside out, Morpheus8 is a game changer. But does it really work? A recent study, “Dermatologic facial applications of Morpheus8 fractional radiofrequency microneedling” took a look at the effectiveness and safety of one of the latest non-surgical options for facial lifts and tightening. From scarring to laxity and acne, collagen induction is known for helping with a variety of issues. Here’s what the researchers found.
RF technology works by emitting a low-frequency electromagnetic wave, creating an electromagnetic field in the skin. Then, this field creates dermal thermal heating, which in turn promotes elastin and collagen synthesis as part of the natural healing process. Different parts of the body (and different people) respond slightly differently, which is why Morpheus8 can be customized for optimal temperatures during each appointment. There needs to be specific degrees of heat in order to kick-start collagen production. Chromophore targeting is a predecessor of sorts to RF technology, but RF can target energy with a much lower risk of causing hyperpigmentation and injury. It’s also suitable for all skin types, which is not true of all other devices.
Doubling Down on Collagen
When you use microneedling with RF, fractional treatment is achieved. This allows for a constant, varied dispersion of the energy to minimize damage overall. The micro-injuries caused by microneedling also encourages collagen production, so you’re getting a double dose with the RF portion. Morpheus8 has differences beyond the emission of RF. It also comes with a variety of tips and configurations so your provider can customize every treatment. There are 24 pins in each tip, each directing the RF energy to ideal levels of the skin. Tips are partially insulated for maximum control, making them perfect for delicate and/or small areas.
Plus, Morpheus8 features dual treatment options for even more customization. This includes a cycle mode and a fixed mode. The cycle mode penetrates and extracts rapidly with every pulse. When fixed, the needles are placed in the skin and the RF is delivered at a steady pace. Researchers found that the ability to individualize the Morpheus8 treatment led to the majority of patients being happy with their results. In one study, which included those who experienced advanced face laxity within five years of a facelift, Morpheus8 helped them to achieve “significant clinical improvement” in the jowl and neck (this was reported by blinded investigators as well as a self-assessment).
A History of Great Results
Another, much larger, study of 247 people revealed a “statistically significant improvement” for every single participant. They used the Baker Face/Neck classification rating for this study. Additionally, 93 percent of them said they were satisfied with their post-treatment improvement. The researchers found that those best suited for Morpheus8 were not interested in dermal fillers or Botox for the most part, and many of them already had tried fillers but remained unhappy with their skin laxity. Researchers noted, “In the age of excessive and improperly placed fillers used to achieve facial lifting and tightening, the demand for RF technology has exponentially increased in those for whom the additional volume is not recommended.”
Morpheus8 can be an effective tool for clients of all ages. The device is typically used on the jawline and face for tightening and remodeling. However, bony areas such as the jaw and forehead are typically treated with two passes and a decreasing depth and energy level for numerous reasons, including comfort. The exact length of your Morpheus8 treatment will depend on what areas you are treating.
Making the Most of Morpheus8
You can use this technology for other skin goals, too. Researchers found that it was helpful for scarring and treating some forms of acne, too. Ultimately, they recommend Morpheus8 to treat a “wide range of dermatologic concerns” and noted that it ”is safe for use in patients of all skin types.” Whether you are a seasoned microneedling fan or you’ve never experienced it before, why not opt for the best? Combining treatments has never been easier.
