Morpheus8 is sometimes called the latest generation of microneedling, but it is so much more. Now available at Palo Alto Laser and Skin Care, if you’ve tried microneedling before and loved the results, Morpheus8 is a must for you. And if you’re new to the microneedling family completely, Morpheus8 provides a solid foundation to get started. Let’s take a look at the history of microneedling—and how we got to Morpheus8.
The roots of microneedling began at the turn of the last century. It’s one of the staple forms of collagen induction therapy, or a means of increasing collagen production in the body. Collagen is both a fountain of youth and a healer. Microneedling, which creates tiny micro-lesions in the skin that are fully controlled, “tells” the body to start producing more collagen and exactly where. Like many cosmetic treatments today, microneedling originally began as a medical treatment designed to help heal those who were wounded in war. However, it was so effective that it quickly evolved into a way to turn back the clock and heal superficial issues like acne scarring and hyperpigmentation.
How Microneedling Works
Today, there are many microneedling devices. Some are professional-grade and only available to aestheticians like those in our medical day spa. You might see some “microneedling” devices available online or in stores, too. Most of the time, these are not professional-grade and won’t do much for your skin besides give it a very light exfoliation. Only trained experts have access to the technology that pierces the skin deep enough to actually induct collagen production that will have visible positive results.
In worst-case scenarios, you may find professional microneedling devices (illegally) for sale. A true DIY microneedling session is very dangerous. For untrained people, it is very easy to make the needles go too deeply into the skin, causing infections, permanent scarring, and other issues. If you’re interested in microneedling, it is essential that you only work with an aesthetician for this service.
Different microneedling devices at the professional level reach different depths. The devices are comprised of tiny needles, but it doesn’t feel like you’re being pricked with them because they are so small. Instead, most people compare a microneedling session to feeling like microdermabrasion or exfoliation. Numbing cream is almost never necessary. It takes time for results of microneedling to show, and most clients opt for monthly sessions to get and achieve the results they want. Adding medical-grade skin care products or a facial after microneedling is a great way to take advantage of the temporary micro-channels in the skin created by the needles. When topicals can go deeper, they work better.
The Morpheus8 Difference
So, what is Morpheus8 and what makes it different? First of all, the needles in this device are longer and go deeper than any other microneedling system. This will obviously induce more collagen production, but that’s not all. They also deliver radiofrequency (RF) energy to various depths of the skin. RF is another well-known tool for collagen induction, but other RF treatments are completely non-invasive (whereas microneedling and Morpheus8 are considered minimally invasive).
Plus, Morpheus8 has serums (topicals) that can further boost results at the end of the treatment. This is a natural pairing, and quite a bit like adding a facial to the end of a microneedling session—but with even more strength and power. Ultimately, Morpheus8 takes microneedling to the next level. It’s a hybrid treatment so you can really double down on how much collagen you’re producing.
Which is for You?
We continue to offer both traditional microneedling and Morpheus8 because everyone is different. Celebrities love Morpheus8, but they are also still big fans of original microneedling. If you’re new to microneedling, you may want to start with the traditional method. Those with open lesions should wait until skin has healed for any kind of microneedling session, but especially for Morpheus8 given the depth. If you’re unsure which one is for you, we offer complimentary consultations on all treatments and this is where you can get matched with the right option. Every provider is personally trained by Zuzana Likar, because the skill of your provider matters just as much as getting matched with the right treatment.
