Neurotoxins
Neurotoxins Botox and Dysport are one of the most popular zero downtime treatments at Palo Alto Laser and Skin Care. They can be used to treat dynamic lines and wrinkles, as well as excessive sweating also known as hyperhidrosis. Alto known as neuromodulators, Botox and Dysport work by temporarily relaxing or “freezing” specific muscles that cause wrinkles and lines, ultimately training the face to avoid creating these unwanted blemishes.
All muscles get stronger and more defined with use, and the same is true of the muscles of facial expression as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. The more we squint, frown, or wrinkle our brow in concentration, the more prevalent and deeper these lines and wrinkles will become. There is also another aging issue at hand, which is the reduction of collagen and elastin synthesis in the body. Combined, “strong” wrinkle-causing muscles and a decrease in collagen leads to skin that is wrinkled, folded, and aged.
Neuromodulators are also a great pre-treatment choice before Fraxel Dual or Thermage or Picoway Resolve procedures. Relaxing dynamic lines before these treatments will enhance your results.
Similarities and Differences of Popular Neurotoxins
Botox vs. Dysport
Both are comprised of the same ingredient, Botulinum A, used to prevent wrinkles in adults by relaxing the muscles beneath the skin. Once the muscles relax, the skin becomes smoother. Botox is arguably better known than Dysport, but Dysport received its FDA approval in 2009 so it is also a proven and effective neurotoxin product.
Dysport is indicated for temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines, Botox on another hand has 3 indications for horizontal forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet, although both brands are commonly used on multiple facial and off face areas “on and off label”.
Results from both Dysport and Botox last 3 – 5 months on average, depending on the client’s age, the severity of the lines or wrinkles, and the number of units injected. Our highly trained and certified providers will help you make an informed decision on which neurotoxin is right for you.

FAQs About Neurotoxins
Botox and Dysport are injections, so they feel similar to getting a flu shot though at a much more superficial level and with much smaller needle. Pain generally is not associated with neurotoxin injections. For those with sensitivities or anxiety over injections, a topical numbing agent can be helpful. We also offer Pro-Nox for patients who want additional comfort, which is a self-administered blend of oxygen and nitrous analgesia.
There is no downtime required when opting for neurotoxin injections. However, there are some best practices to follow in order to maximize results and minimize unwanted effects. For example, not rubbing the injection site, and applying downward pressure on the treatment area at least four hours after your treatment can help you get the best results.
Both Botox and Dysport are proven and effective at temporarily stopping and reducing lines and wrinkles. The “best” neurotoxin for you will depend on your goals, the injection site, and how your body responds to the treatment. If you’re like a lot of patients, you will benefit from using both Botox or Dysport in targeted areas when treating the whole face.
