Post-Microneedling Care for the Best Results

Post-Microneedling Care for the Best Results | Palo Alto Laser & Skin Care

Microneedling is a decades-old means of stimulating collagen production, though of course the technologies and techniques have advanced over the years. It is one of the most-requested treatments at Palo Alto Laser and Skin Care, where Zuzana Likar personally trains every staff member to the highest standards. However, the results of microneedling are not immediate, as the body needs time to stimulate collagen production. This means that most of the work and benefits of microneedling actually take place after the treatment, and during this period there are things you can do to enhance and optimize your results.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that is safe for all skin types with little to no recovery period. Most sessions take 30 minutes or less and do not require a numbing agent (though it is available for sensitive skin or areas). The most important post-care “must” is to follow the instructions from your provider. Our skin is one of a kind, which means every microneedling treatment is also unique. However, there are a few common “dos and don’ts” to bear in mind if you’re getting ready for a microneedling treatment.

What to DO After Microneedling

Avoiding direct sun exposure after any skin treatment is important. When you are exposed to UV rays, make sure to apply a medical-grade sunscreen with an SPF of 30+. Wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses following your procedure to maximize sun protection. During the summer months, it’s best to plan any procedure around vacations. It is never a good idea to undergo a treatment or procedure and immediately head to a tropical getaway. Remember that microneedling requires some time to show results, so there is no need to squeeze in an appointment right before a big event or vacation.

There are a variety of medical-grade topicals that can help amplify results of microneedling. We will discuss the best options for you during your complimentary consultation. Most people benefit from a hyaluronic acid (HA) to keep skin hydrated and a vitamin C serum after their treatment can help with healing and brightness. Of course, ensuring your body gets enough rest and water is critical for healing—from microneedling or any treatment. Collagen production cannot occur without proper sleep.

The Don’ts of Microneedling

Microneedling renders your skin vulnerable and fragile, even if it doesn’t look or feel like it. You want to avoid exfoliants and chemical peels immediately before and after microneedling. Otherwise, you risk seriously damaging your skin, which can lead to scarring and hyperpigmentation. In some cases, tiny scabs may form from microneedling (remember that this treatment really creates hundreds of micro-injuries in the skin). This is perfectly normal, but (just like any scab) avoid picking them. Picking scabs can cause scarring and delay the healing process, and can even lead to infection.

Although most of your daily activities can immediately be resumed after microneedling, avoid wearing makeup for 24 hours after your treatment. Your provider will discuss which topicals can and cannot be used post-treatment. In many cases, an initial microneedling appointment is a great time to upgrade your skin care routine, and we have all of the best lines and products available.

Taking Microneedling to the Next Level with Morpheus8

Microneedling is not the only option for collagen induction therapy, but it is the most well-known. Another method is using radiofrequency (RF) technology, which reaches deeper layers of tissue and fat than microneedling. Combining the two, microneedling and RF, has resulted in the Morpheus8 treatment. This procedure is a form of microneedling with specially coated pins that emit RF energy when in place. This hybrid approach leads to the best possible results because collagen induction therapy is taking place at various tissue levels. Morpheus8 treatments take about two hours on average with a similar recovery period.

If you are interested in turning back the clock and kick-starting collagen production, microneedling or Morpheus8 might be for you. Many clients choose to undergo monthly treatments to keep and sustain their results. If you are looking for a natural way to rejuvenate your skin, schedule a consultation for microneedling today.
